Is it necessary to teach a child to self-soothe?

The ability to sleep is something that should come naturally, but parents may inadvertently make their children rely on them or other objects to fall asleep.

Over time, a child may become unable to sleep without the presence of an adult or soothing objects, leading to fussiness due to excessive tiredness.

Some children even require a nanny or caregiver to spend an hour trying to put them to sleep, and they easily wake up in the middle of the night. Sometimes, they may even lack energy for school.

If you're okay with carrying your child to sleep and don't mind doing it for a while, or even for as long as three years (some children need to be carried to sleep until they are three), and your child doesn't wake up in the middle of the night, then it's fine to continue.

However, if you don't want to carry your child, have already carried them to sleep, or they wake up frequently at night, then gradually reducing soothing methods may be necessary to improve their sleep.
