In Hong Kong, most mothers believe that if a baby can go without milk for 6-8 hours, they are considered night weaned.
For Charlotte,
night weaning means that the baby sleeps soundly after the mother goes to bed at night and is fed only after 0700 in the morning.
Expectations:
Charlotte knows that some babies can be night weaned at one month, while others may still need milk at night at three and a half years old. We expect that a 4-month-old baby should be able to go at least 4 hours at night without feeding. After 6 months, if they have started solid foods, we can expect them to go 10 hours at night without needing to eat.
The primary conditions for night weaning:
πΆπ» The baby needs to eat enough during the day and feel full. (If the baby doesn't eat enough during the day, they may wake up hungry at night, even at three years old.)
πΆπ» Only two feedings during a 12-hour night.
πΆπ» Baby's weight reaches 12-13 pounds. (Weight and growth curve are more important than age when determining if night weaning is appropriate.)
When can you seek our advice?
- When the baby is 9 months or older and cannot go 6-8 hours without feeding at night.
- If you have questions about the timing or quantity of feedings and solid foods.
- If the baby consumes more milk during the night than during the day.
- If the mother's emotional well-being is affected because she has to feed at night.
The above is a general guideline; every baby is different!
